Courtesans of the Kinpeiro House in the New Yoshiwara

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting courtesans at the modern Kinpeiro House in the New Yoshiwara. At left, an elegantly dressed high-ranking courtesan arrives at the entrance with her attendants, a servant sheltering her with an umbrella. The verandah above is crowded with beauties enjoying a view of the busy street. In the center a young girl leans over the balustrade, using a slender pipe to try to retrieve a fallen hair ornament on the roof below. Through the window, a woman can be seen reading a long letter. Cherry trees bloom in the courtyard, and an ornate tasseled lantern hangs from the eaves at upper right. A beautiful subject with lively color and fine detail, including embossing in the white kimono trim and soft shading in the cherry blossoms.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 28 1/4" x 14" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Partially backed with old paper. Three separate panels. Some soiling and ink offsetting. Some creasing and rubbing in subject as shown. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
