Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle of Kawanakajima

Comments - Terrific depiction of the famous duel between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen during the Battle of Kawanakajima. In this intriguing print, the battle takes place in a river rather than on land. At right, Kenshin gallops into the river on a gray horse after Shingen, swinging his sword at his enemy in a surprise attack. His own horse plunging through the deep water, Shingen deftly thrusts out his iron battle fan to deflect the blow. Shingen wears a magnificent battle helmet topped with a horned demon and flowing white wig, giving him an imposing appearance. Kenshin's head is swathed in white cloth, leaving only his eyes visible. At right, one of Shingen's retainers rushes to his defense gripping a spear. A great dramatic image an incredible sense of action and movement in the frenzied waves. A fascinating variation on the classic samurai subject. Includes a beautiful burnished scroll pattern in Kenshin's green robe and embossing in the white cloth.
