Attacking a Courtesan, 1888

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Kagotsurube Sato no Eizame," which tells the story of a wealthy country man, Sano Jirozaemon, who falls in love with the beautiful courtesan Yatsuhashi during a visit to Edo. After learning that she has another lover, he attacks and kills her during a jealous frenzy. Grabbing hold of the end of her pink sash as she tries to flee along the teahouse verandah, Jirozaemon raises his sword high with a threatening frown. Yatsuhashi turns away in fright, throwing up her hand in self-defense. She wears a lavender kimono patterned with bouquets of flowers and ribbons, her hair arranged in two large loops with a comb and many hairpins. The verandah overlooks the courtyard garden, with a full moon glowing softly overhead. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. A terrific image with large expressive figures and a handsomely detailed setting.
