Widow Attacking a Courtesan, 1887

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of Onoe Kikugoro V as a gray-haired widow attacking the courtesan Hotogisu, played by Nakamura Fukusuke VI. The elderly woman raises a knife high above her head as she tugs on the end of the beauty's blue obi, pulled her off-balance. The courtesan throws her hand up in the air as she falls, a confused expression on her face. She wears a beautifully embossed white kimono shaded with pink over a red under robe, her hair pulled back into a large bun with a few looses wisps framing her face and neck. The struggle takes place on a wooden walkway over a pond filled with blossoming irises, with palace buildings seen in dark silhouette along the horizon. Misty clouds drift across a glowing full moon left. A great design with large colorful figures and a beautiful setting.
