Series; Comparison of the High Renown of the Loyal Retainers and Faithful Samurai, 1848

Fuwa Katsuemon Masatane and Torie Riemon fighting - Great image of the ronin Fuwa Katsuemon Masatane fighting eye to eye with Torie Riemon, one of Lord Moronao's retainers, during the night attack. The pair clashes blades as they stare at each other intently, neither backing down. Masatane wears the 47 ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robe over his armor and a battle helmet with attached cape. His opponent is dressed in a brown plaid kimono tucked up at the waist, the sleeves tied back with a white sash. The series title cartouche at upper right takes the form of a tsuba or guard for a sword. A handsome composition, nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 10"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned along edges a few small holes, repaired from reverse. Faint spotting and soiling surrounding subject with minor creasing at edges and corners. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
