Taira no Atsumori

Series; Stories of a Hundred Heroes of High Renown, 1843 - 1844

Taira no Atsumori - Handsome portrait of Taira no Atsumori playing the flute with a sweet expression. The young warrior was killed during his first combat at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani by the Minamoto samurai Kumagai Naozane. According to "The Tales of the Heike," Kumagai tearfully beheaded the young man, realizing that he was the same age as his own son, and vowed to say prayers for him. Atsumori's untimely death became the subject of many plays. Here, Atsumori is shown playing music before the battle, wearing a fine suit of armor over a red robe and hakama pants patterned with flowers. He also wears a billowing cape with a design of blue and green medallions. A poignant image from this famous tale.
