Comments - Fantastic look behind the lines of the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress. Here, Yoshitsune and his forces gather in the woods prior to attacking. He sits on a folding stool at right, wearing a horned battle helmet and holding a battle fan. His father retainer Benkei sits on the ground beside him, an arsenal of weapons at his back, including a saw and a large wooden mallet. In the center, a young warrior lifts an enormous tree trunk festooned with vines above his head, his muscles bulging. His feet firmly planted on the uneven ground, he supports the heavy trunk on his shoulder, scowling as he looks out of the corners of his eyes. A samurai at left watches in astonishment as the hero easily moves the trunk out of the way, a small waterfall rushing over the cliff below. A fascinating scene with a dramatic composition and wonderful detail in the rugged natural setting.
