Kaneko no Juro Ietada after a Battle

Comments - Intriguing diptych showing the famed 12th century Minamoto warrior Kaneko no Juro Ietada after a battle, his armor pieced with many broken arrows. He seems to have used a fellow warrior's chest plate as a shield, draped across his helmet and tied in place with a white sash, riddled with additional arrows. He holds a shallow cup of sake to his chest, and a ceremonial sake warmer in his other hand as he looks back over his shoulder at a nobleman. The elderly daimyo Miura no Daisuke Yoshiaki waves his fan angrily at the young warrior, his retainer Wada no Kotaro Yoshimori sitting quietly on the ground beside him. Wonderfully expressive figures in this interesting subject, drawn with fine line work and careful detail and an attractive floral border.
