The Night Attack of the Faithful Samurai, 1857

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the night attack on Moronao's palace by the 47 ronin. At left, a warrior in the foreground lunges forward with his sword thrust out, grabbing the robe of an enemy and causing him to tumble forward with his hands out. Behind him, another ronin swings his blade overhead as a brazier goes tumbling through the air above, spilling red hot coals. The battle continues in the snowy courtyard behind them, with samurai battling Moronao's retainers under the snow-covered pines and atop the roof. The ronin wear their trademark black and white dogtooth bordered robes over their armor, and straw sandals for traction in the snow. A great dramatic design filled with energy, nicely colored and detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
