Beauty and Buddhist Deity, 1853

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of the Buddhist Deity Shindoji appearing in a cloud of smoke above the beauty Senjo's head. She looks up in surprise, throwing her arms wide in alarm. The deity smiles serenely, wearing flowing brocade robes and carrying a golden yellow lotus blossom. The woman has paused while traveling, kneeling next to a wicker trunk attached to a yoke, with a hat on the ground nearby. Mountains rise in the distance above a line of clouds. The actors are Mimasu Gennosuke II as Shindoji and Onoe Kikujiro II as Ruri Senjo. A handsome design with fine bokashi shading in the clouds and sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
