Ke Brigade, Fifth Group: Nakamura Shikan IV as Matsuomaru, 1866 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan IV as the samurai Matsuomaru carrying a large bale wrapped in woven straw matting. He wears a red kimono with a bold pattern of pine branches, his namesake (matsu). His flared wig and red stage makeup give him an imposing appearance. The inset at top left features a matoi or fireman's standard for the Ke Brigade, Fifth Group, flanked by lanterns on poles. An attractive composition with fine detail in the hair and straw matting.
