Comments - Dramatic image from the Battle of Koromo River during the Early Nine Years' War between the Minamoto and the Abe Clans. Pursuing Abe no Sadato along the Koromo River, the young warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie (also known as Hachimantaro Yoshiie) supposedly engaged his enemy in a linked verse (renga) exchange while on horseback, and afterwards allowed him to escape. Here, Yoshiie faces his enemy while riding a black horse at left, wearing a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon and a red vest with the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto Clan. Sadato glares at him in the center, gripping a naginata blade missing its handle, his long dark hair streaming out around his face. Wounded and dying men litter the ground, along with broken weapons and tattered standards. A great natural setting with pine trees framing a view of the mountains. A great design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
