Kusunoki Tamon Maru Masatsura Battling the Old Badger in the Form of a Priest, circa 1843 - 1845

Comments - Fantastic scene of the young samurai Kusunoki Tamon Maru Masatsura battling an old badger that had taken the shape of a priest. The youth stands his ground firmly, gripping his sword with both hands as the grimacing priest towers over him, gripping a rolled up blind under his arm. Kusunoki wears a red kimono with plaid sleeves tucked into floral hakama pants, the sleeves whipping around him in the breeze and his pants legs trailing beneath his feet. Cherry blossoms petals shower down over the pair against the night sky. A wonderful composition with a lively sense of movement.

Artist - Yoshitsuya (1822 - 1866)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with thin paper. Minor creases throughout. Some spotting and soiling in subjects. Slight fraying of top edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
