Night Attack of the Soga Brothers, 1900

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene from the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. At left, the elder brother Soga Juro swings his sword at a samurai wielding a naginata over his head with both hands. In the center, Goromaru, one of Suketsune's retainers, emerges from beneath his disguise under a woman's pale pink kimono. At right, Soga Goro turns to face Goromaru, gripping his sword. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V as Soga Juro, Ichikawa [?] as Nitta Shiro, Ichikawa Somegoro IV as Gosho Goromaru, and Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Soga Goro. A lively image with large colorful figures set against a softly shaded night sky.
