Comments - Interesting kabuki illustration of the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the play "Kiichi Hogen Sanryaku no Maki." The retired warrior Yoshioka Kiichi is shown sitting on a bench in his chrysanthemum garden, scowling angrily at two servants. Kiichi fought for the Heike, but his family had alliances to the Genji. Having written three books on battle strategy, he is unsure who deserves to receive them, as members of both clans are interested in obtaining his secrets. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan, has joined his household in disguise as the servant Torazo to obtain the books. Torazo kneels before the elderly general, a sheepish expression on his face as he tilts his head. His fellow yakko or footman Chienai, in reality Yoshioka Kisanta, stands behind him with a walking stick tucked under his arm, frowning unhappily. Large chrysanthemums bloom behind a garden fence in the background. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo IV as Kisanta, Iwai Kumesaburo as Ushiwakamaru, and Ichikawa Ebizo V as Kiichi Hogen. A handsome design, nicely detailed.
