Beauty and Apprentice Swordsmith, 1839

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring Onoe Eizaburo III as Oren, the daughter of the famous swordsmith Masamune, and Sawamura [?] as his apprentice Kichisuke, actually Rai Taro Kunitoshi. Kichisuke has fallen in love with his master's daughter, but he tells her that he cannot marry her unless his father will teach him the secret of his craft. She looks at him with a dismayed expression, carrying an offering tray with two vases on it. She wears a lovely floral kimono shaded from dark to light blue, tied with a tie-dyed obi. He twists a towel nervously between his hands, frowning over his shoulder. Nicely colored with an attractively detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 18 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams with some light remnants from previous backing along edges and on reverse.. A few small losses along edges and at corners, repaired from reverse. Slight spotting and soiling in subject with some small wormholes, repaired from behind. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
