Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kiuchi Sogo, 1884

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Kiuchi Sogoro leaving his family during a snowstorm. A local mayor, he petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor Hotta Masanobu. Facing execution for this illegal act, he left his family. His wife and children watch from the window of their home at upper right as he turns for one last look, lifting his hat above his head. His face is an expression of sorrow at their forced parting. A handsome design with a large expressive figure set against a softly shaded background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams, backed with old paper. Slight soiling, faint offsetting, very slight rubbing, a few faint creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
