The Third Month (Yayoi): Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Yosaburo and Onoe Baiko IV as Otomi - Handsome double portrait from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kirare Yosa," which tells the story of a young man named Yosaburo, who was captured during a tryst with a gang boss's mistress, Otomi, and slashed all over. Dishonored, the scarred young man became a petty criminal until he re-encountered his lost love. This scene shows the couple in a solemn moment, Otomi looking up with a worried expression, her mouth slightly agape. Yosaburo looks down at her with a sober frown, aware that they cannot go on as they are. White-capped waves crash against the shore behind them, with fishing boats anchored in the bay and mountains beyond. An attractive design with a beautiful landscape setting and fine shading. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
