Night Struggle over a Scroll, 1854

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of a warrior and a beauty struggling over a scroll or banner, with a man caught in the center holding a horned demon mask with a flowing red wig. The warrior wears a magnificent black kimono patterned with a tiger in a bamboo grove over his suit of armor. He holds a lantern high above his head, casting a shaft of light across the dark night scene. The woman wears a furry robe over a red and yellow kimono trimmed with fringe and a suit of armor, her hair pulled back in a low ponytail. The fellow in the center frowns unhappily, his hair cropped short. He wears a green robe with a motif of dragons and swirling clouds over full hakama pants. Terrific large figures with wonderful detail in the expressions and clothing, and a great setting in front of a dilapidated country house. Beautiful handling of the shading to create the ray of light.
