Series; Famous Places of Edo Compared with One Hundred Beautiful Women

The Pine of Success, 1857 - Charming image of a beauty fishing from a pleasure boat, smiling eagerly as she leans forward, holding her bamboo pole over the water. She wears an intricately patterned gray kimono tied with a plum colored brocade obi, her hair pulled back into a knot adorned with a comb, a blue ribbon, and a few hairpins. A red lacquer tray nearby holds blue and white dishes of food, and a second fishing pole held by a companion can be seen at lower left. The inset above shows the famous Pine of Success on the Asakusa River, the branches of the ancient tree extending out over the water on wooden supports. A lovely design with fine line work and soft bokashi shading.
