Struggling over a Banner, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of several people struggling over a banner. At right, a warrior grips the end of the banner between his teeth as he draws his sword. The young beauty before him cowers behind her hat in self defense, turning her head away. At left, a commoner has the other end of the banner draped over his shoulder, clutching the fabric with both hands. Above him, a frightened samurai holds his sword upright, staring down with eyes wide and a worried frown. The right panel features Nakamura Fukusuke as Ise Saburo Yoshimori and Iwai Kumesaburo as Oyama. Nice expressive figures with fine bokashi shading in the night sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 20"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Several wormholes and small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling and rubbing, creasing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
