Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Commoner with a Toothpick, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young man strolling at night, looking over his shoulder with a suspicious frown as he takes a toothpick from his mouth. One sleeve of his tie-dyed blue cotton kimono is pushed down at the waist, revealing a black undergarment, the hem tucked up for easier walking. Behind him, people stroll along a path framed by trees in dark silhouette against the night sky. A handsome expressive figure with soft shading in the background and embossing in the red loincloth.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. One hole in subject, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
