Original 19th century Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesans in the Yoshiwara

Comments - Attractive portrait of two courtesans in the Yoshiwara enjoying a nighttime stroll. The beauty at left wears a blue kimono patterned with roosters, tied with a blue-green obi that features a large fan. Her hair is pulled back into a bun adorned with two combs and many decorative hairpins. Her companion is dressed in a tan outer robe with a design of streamers and blossoms, tied with a red brocade obi. Each wears tall wooden geta sandals with three "teeth" rather than the more commonly seen two. Blossoming cherry trees frame the night sky overhead, and lanterns are spaced along a fenced garden filled with yellow flowering shrubs. Wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics and setting. A handsome Edo era print.
