Husband Leaving His Mistress, 1852

Comments - Interesting scene inside a courtesan's private quarters of the samurai Suzuki Mondo taking leave of his lover, the courtesan Hashimotoya Shiraito. His wife Oyasu hangs over his shoulders, smiling as she cajoles him into returning home. Shiraito kneels at right, looking down with a sad expression as she anxiously bites her handkerchief. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro as Oyasu, Sawamura Chojuro as Suzuki Mondo, and Bando Shuka as Hashimotoya Shiraito. Great expressive figures in a handsomely detailed interior setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 19 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. A few small holes in subject and along edges repaired from reverse. Faint toning of top edge with minor spotting in subject and along edges. Some remnants from previous backing along right edge of left panel. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
