Dying Pilgrim and Angry Samurai, 1848

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene showing a young religious pilgrim gripping a sword stuck into the floor, the blue shadow around his eyes an indication of impending death. The handle of the sword is the top of a shakujou, a staff with a ringed finial traditionally carried by pilgrims. At right, a kneeling samurai glares at him angrily, a folding fan clenched between his teeth. Outside the room, a cherry tree covered with white blossoms frames a softly shaded, peach colored sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo and Nakamura Utaemon. A handsome design with expressive figures and attractive color, nicely detailed with faint embossing in the blossoms.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" + 19 7/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams. A few small holes along edges repaired from reverse. Faint staining along bottom edge with some light creases near corners. Slight rubbing near edges with spotting and soiling in subject. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
