Robber Fighting off Guards, 1857

Comments - Terrific image of Ichikawa Kodanji as the famous robber Inaba Kozo Jirokichi fighting off guards in the snow. Sometimes called Nezumi Kozo, which roughly translates to "Little Rat Boy," the character was based on a real-life thief who became a folk hero similar to Robin Hood. Here, the rogue steps on the back of one assailant as he simultaneously grabs a spear thrust at him from the right while slicing at another attacker with his sword at left. Snow falls gently over the undulating water behind the figures, with pine trees framing the wintry gray sky. At far left, Bando Hikosaburo appears as the samurai Iwami Shinzaburo, watching the confrontation with a frown. A great design with expressive figures and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
