Cherry Blossoms at Night in the Garden of Returning Geese, 1854

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji entertaining a beauty on a spring night. He leans over a red robe draped over a walkway railing, smiling dreamily as the beauty looks back over her shoulder at him. At right, a woman carries an exotic pineapple on an offering tray, her colorful chrysanthemum-patterned robe trailing on the floor behind her. She follows several other women carrying offerings around the deck at the edge of the home. A full moon glows high above a river flowing under the walkway, surrounded by delicate pink and white cherry blossoms, a few geese descending for the night seen in silhouette in the evening sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A lovely triptych with beautiful color, nicely detailed with delicate embossing in the white kimono trim.
