Famous Places in Tokyo: Cherry Blossoms Viewing at Ueno, 1880

Comments - Terrific triptych of the Meiji Emperor and Empress on an outing to Ueno Park to view the cherry blossoms. Attendants hold umbrellas over the Imperial couple as a beauty at right urges them forward to sit in a waiting armchair. The Empress and her ladies-in-waiting all wear colorful outer robes over white kimono tucked into red hakama pants. Dignitaries in top hats and tailcoats watch respectfully at left in front of the temple buildings. An interesting record of Meiji court life with vibrant color and an attractive landscape setting.

Artist - Hiroshige III (1843 - 1894)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few areas of soiling and fading along edges. Some small worm hole in subject and margins, repaired from reverse. Light spotting in subject with a few vertical creases and areas of rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
