Sawamura Tanosuke III as Ohatsu, 1862

Comments - Attractive portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III as the loyal maid Ohatsu, waiting in the garden for the evil Iwafuji to arrive. A senior lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji caused the suicide of her junior Onoe by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Ohatsu has vowed to avenge the death of her mistress, and plans to attack her in the garden. She kneels on the ground with a sly smile, holding an umbrella. One sleeve of her outer blue print kimono has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a tie-dyed red under robe trimmed with blue. A narrow stream flows through the scene, with a shrub covered with yellow flowers blooming at right. Nice soft color and a handsome setting with fine bokashi shading in the background.
