Portrait of Tenjin Kakemono

Comments - Handsome kakemono or vertical diptych portrait of Tenjin, the Shinto deification of the exiled ninth-century poet Sugawara no Michizane. He sits on a platform wearing a voluminous black robe and court cap, and holds a staff of office. Swags of drapery emblazoned with his mon or family crest hang overhead, and a blossoming plum, a pine tree, and bamboo appear behind him. An offering tray is placed just below the platform, with two retainers each holding a bow and a handful of arrows, sitting on tiger and leopard skins. A pair of guardian lion statues completes the scene. Wonderful detail in this fine Edo era image of a beloved scholar.

Artist - Yoshinobu (active circa 1848 - 1864)

Image Size - 8 3/4" x 26 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two separate panels. Toned as shown. Some light rubbing at edges. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
