Ichikawa Ebizo V as Saimyo-ji Tokiyori Nyudo, 1859

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo V as Saimyo-ji Tokiyori Nyudo, a monk and retired Hojo regent who traveled the country in disguise gathering information. He is shown holding a string of prayer beads, looking down with an unhappy frown, his brows furrowed. He wears a monk's mantle over voluminous gray robes, a blue scarf draped around his neck. The inset above shows and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Genzaemon Tsuneyo. When Tokiyori arrived unexpectedly at Tsuneyo's shabby house, the poor man treated him with as much honor as he could, even burning Tsuneyo's prized bonsai trees to cook a meal for him. He holds a tray with a burning container of incense on it, a thin wisp of smoke rising up into the air. A nice design with expressive figures.
