Blind Masseur Bun'ya, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of Bun'ya, a blind masseur. His oldest sister sells herself to a brothel so that Bun'ya will have the money to buy his official masseur's license and go into business, but while traveling Bun'ya will be murdered by a robber. Here, Bun'ya is shown visiting his sister, who smiles happily at him as he kneels in the doorway with a rather anguished expression. The beauty holds out a black lacquer tray with a cup of sake on it to her seated guest at right. He scratches his head in a puzzled manner, holding a pipe case and tobacco pouch in his lap. A cabinet behind him holds a scroll and a container of incense, while at left, a kettle sits atop the red coals of a brazier. Great expressive figures with a nicely detailed interior setting.
