Spying outside a Window, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the story of the samurai Nagoya Sanza. Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Fuwa Banzaemon. They later meet by accident in the Yoshiwara, as Sanza's wife has sold herself to a brothel, calling herself Katsuragi. Here Sanza and his companion wait outside the window of Katsuragi's room as she entertains Banzaemon. At right, Sanza looks down with a distraught frown as he pushes through a garden fence made of brush, gripping his sword with his hand. Inside, Banzaemon leers at Katsuragi, who demurely turns away, patting the side of her face with her kimono sleeve. Cherry blossoms frame the scene, and the night sky is dusted with mica. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon as Kabushi Kazo, Sawamura Tatsunosuke as Katsuragi, Nakamura Shikan as Fuwa Banzaemon, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Nagoya Sanza. Nice expressive figures in an attractively detailed setting.
