Ichikawa Danjuro in Jishin Kato, 1896

Comments - Dramatic portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro in the lead role of Kato Kiyomasa in the play commonly known as "Jishin Kato" (Earthquake Kato). The great warrior stands gripping a lacquer-handled naginata as he watches clouds of smoke and flames rising from a castle in the distance. He wears an elegant vest lined with blue brocade over a fine suit of armor, his hair pulled back into a bushy ponytail. He leans forward, staring ahead intently with a grim frown. An incredible, bold and fantastic kabuki design with a striking composition. A great choice for a kabuki enthusiast.

Artist - Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944)

Image Size - 28" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Some toning and ink offsetting in subject as shown. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
