Yamashiro: The Seppuku of Saigo and His Generals, 1877

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of the defeat of the rebels at Kagoshima. At far left, the rebel leader Saigo Takamori prepares to commit seppuku or ritual suicide rather than be captured. Kneeling beside a narrow stream, he plunges a sword into his belly, still wearing his black military uniform. One of his generals beside him has already done the same, blood streaming over his body, his bloody knife still in his hand. In the center, a rebel fights bravely between two Japanese soldiers, one on horseback and one on foot. The artist is Hayakawa Shozan, who was a student of Kyosai, signed under the name Shogetsu Hosai. A poignant image of the final moments of this heroic leader and his men. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms and soft shading in the dark night sky.

Artist - Hayakawa Shozan (1850 - 1892)

Image Size - 14 1/4" 28 1/8" + margins
