Memorial Portrait of Bando Shuka I as Okaru, 1855

Comments - Handsome memorial portrait of Bando Shuka I, a well-known onnagata, specializing in female roles. She is shown as the beauty Okaru, smiling and raising a hand to her forehead to shield her eyes. Her kimono is shaded from blue to white, bordered with butterflies and blue flowers, tied with a yellow checked obi. An attractive example of shini-e or death portraits.

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 10"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Faint toning and rubbing near edges. A couple small stains and areas of spotting in subject. A few very small holes in subject and at corners, repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
