Samurai and Frightened Priest, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of two men on a country road at night. The monk at right throws his arms wide as he stares ahead with an alarmed expression, his eyes wide. He grips a shakuhachi flute in one hand, and wears a gray kimono over a red under robe. The samurai looks over his shoulder with a solemn frown, one hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. His striped kimono is tucked up at the waist for easier movement, and he has a white towel tied around his neck. Behind the thick foliage there is a wooden bench with a bucket atop it . Nice expressive figures in an atmospheric night setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 19 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Stitching holes along one side of each panel from previous folio binding, a few small holes and thinning spots, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
