Cherry Blossom Viewing at a Shrine, 1855

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of visitors to a shrine viewing the cherry blossoms on a spring day. A beauty on the verandah is surrounded by kneeling attendants, each with a white cloth pinned protectively around her hairstyle. Below, a courtesan intervenes in a dispute between two street knights. The fellow at right draws his sword angrily as the woman spreads her arms out in a stopping gesture. The man at left, rests on one knee, scowling unhappily as the attendant at left watches with a frightened grimace. Flowering cherry trees frame the scene overhead, with lush grass beneath the verandah. An interesting subject with expressive figures, nicely colored.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 5/8" x 14 5/8"
