Iwafuji Berating Onoe, 1886

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." A senior lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the zori sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal above her head, waving it accusingly at the meek Onoe, who kneels quietly in the center. Onoe's loyal young maid, Ohatsu, watches from behind a screen at left, unhappy at the ill-treatment of her mistress. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke as the loyal servant Ohatsu, Kawarazaki Kunitaro as Onoe, and Katoaka Gado as Iwafuji. A great illustration from this well-known play with lively color and an elegant palace setting.
