Satsuki (May)

Series; The Five Festivals

Satsuki (May) - Charming triptych depicting the Boys' Day Festival in May. At left, young boys play samurai in the garden, running around with miniature swords. One boy wears a horned battle helmet while another child wears a black court cap. In the center, a small boy in his mother's arms clamors to get down and join the fun, his sister reaching up to take him. Two other beauties watch from the verandah and step at right. Purple and yellow irises bloom along the water's edge, while in the distance colorful carp banners and pennants flutter above the rooftops of the city. A lovely image with attractive color and detail, including touches of burnishing and soft bokashi shading in the water and sky.

Artist - Gyosui (1868 - 1935)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few pinholes in top margin, repaired, blends well. Faint toning and spotting near top edge of each panel. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
