Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Seated Man Kuchi-e Print

The Kuchi-e Tradition - Kuchi-e prints are woodblock frontispiece illustrations used in the publication of Japanese novels and magazines around the turn of the 20th century. Most kuchi-e prints were illustrations of bijin and continued the tradition of idealized beauties in Japanese art. The subjects, however, have a decidedly Meiji era feel about them and reflect the artistic movement towards more western design. Kuchi-e prints typically have one or two folds because of their use.

Much interest has been generated in the subject since the publication of Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's book, "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture." Kuchi-e prints have become highly sought after and collected by the serious collector.

Comments - Interesting kuchi-e design featuring a seated man at right with a background composed of several different scenes. He wears a striped kimono lined with purple over a red under robe, the sleeves of his outer kimono pushed down to the waist. He scowls, his lips firmly pressed together and his arms folded across his chest. The inset below shows a man crouched in a boat hidden in some reeds, while a groom leads two travelers on horseback under a full moon in the center. At upper left, a courtesan strolls under an umbrella with a young attendant, and at bottom left, two puppies rest in front of a large paper lantern. A fascinating subject with wonderful detail and an unusual mix of monochromatic and colorful images, accented with cloth embossing in the background.
