Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kagekiyo, 1850

Comments - Terrific scene from one of the many kabuki plays based on the life of the great Heike warrior Kagekiyo, who was captured by the Genji and imprisoned in a cave. Here, the brave samurai has broken free from his prison, drawing his sword kneels atop one of the guards. Rays of light radiate upwards from his chest, and his sister and daughter flank the mouth of the cave, each wearing an ornate headdress and carrying a Shinto wand called a gohei. His captors Wada no Taro Yoshimori and Hojo Shiro Tokimasa watch from the right, scowling angrily. Ichikawa Ebizo V stars as Akushichibyoe Kagekiyo. An intriguing illustration from this classic tale.
