The Battle of Kawanakajima in Shinano Province, 1843 - 1847

Comments - Incredible original Hiroshige triptych depicting the Battle of Kawanakajima between the forces of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. Kenshin leads the attack at right, charging ahead on a black horse gripping his sword overhead with both hands, his head swathed in a white monk's cowl. One of his men tears at the fence surrounding the enemy's encampment as Shingen directs his samurai from a folding stool at left. A warrior lifts a large boulder over his head, ready to toss it down on the attackers, while archers on a rocky outcrop at left fire down upon Kenshin's men floating across the river on their wooden shields. A fantastic image with wonderful detail in the armor and facial expressions, and a dramatic landscape setting along the shore with mountains rising in the distance. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. Hiroshige produced very few triptychs based on historic subjects like this. A rare design that would make a terrific addition to any Hiroshige collection.
