Samurai at a Garden Gate, 1850

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych of a samurai waiting outside a garden gate. Yokoyama Tetsuzan stands with his hand atop the gate, wearing a straw raincoat and gripping a bamboo spear. The beauty Oyoshi attempts to answer his knock, but the warrior Funase Yakichi tugs on her kimono sleeve in an effort to stop her. He looks up with a worried expression, frowning unhappily. The beauty stares back at him coyly, tilting her head down and watching him from the corners of her eyes. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Bando Shuka, and Ichikawa Kodanji. Nice colorful figures set off by a plain gray background.

Image Size - 28" x 13 5/8"
