Thief Struggling with a Guard, 1889

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Ichikawa Sadanji as the thief Nango Rikimaru struggling with a guard at the Gokurakuji Temple gate. The grabs the surprised guard by the neck with one hand as he throws his other hand up over his head, frowning angrily. He wears a purple kimono patterned with large red blossoms and green leaves over a red under robe, a dotted towel wrapped about his neck. The temple roof is shown at left, with a view of Mt. Fuji in the distance. A great design with lively color and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 9 3/8" x 14 3/8" + margins as shown
