Series; Kagoshima Newspaper

Battle of Shiroyama, 1877 - Dramatic illustration of the Battle of Shiroyama along the Midori River during the Satsuma Rebellion. This was the final battle during the rebellion, with the defeat of the samurai and the death of their leader, Saigo Takamori. Here, rebels are shown fording the choppy water of the river as a shot explodes in the water. Carrying their weapons high, the warriors make their way through the deep current, one man swimming alongside his black horse while another rides his mount. On the riverbank beyond, rebels rush forward to engage the Imperial Army amidst clouds of smoke, with eerie red and orange flames drifting across the night sky. A terrific image from this historic battle, with expressive figures, rich color, and wonderful detail.
