Monk and Samurai Drawing His Sword, 1875

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a samurai drawing his sword from its sheath, a roll of tissues caught between his teeth. A bearded monk stands behind him, leaning over him with an anxious expression, a string of prayer beads in his hand. The samurai wears a black kimono over a pale blue under robe, his long hair pulled back into a low ponytail over his shoulder. The monk's yellow robe is topped with a purple brocade mantle, and a colorful pillar frames the scene at right. Nice expressive figures, detailed with delicate cloth embossing in the yellow robe and lively color.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/4" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Light toning and rubbing in margins. A couple small holes at corners repaired from reverse. Slight soiling and creasing throughout. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
