Beauty and Elderly Hag, 1852

Comments - Terrific kabuki double portrait of Bando Shuka I as the young Okaji and Seki Sanjuro III as the her mother, the elderly Obaba, in the play "Shinzo tsurifune kidan." Okaji's husband, Danshichi, has just killed his father-in-law, Giheiji, during an argument, an act punishable by death. Here, Okaji grips a sword and smiles slyly up at the gray-haired old crone, who grimaces angrily as she hunches over her. A cloud-like border separates the figures from the procession of the summer festival above, with floats passing by above the heads of the crowd. Great expressive figures with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the background.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 14 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some light soiling in subject. A few minor spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
