Eavesdropping on a Confrontation, 1856

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a young man eavesdropping on a confrontation. He stands outside the door at left, tilting his head and smiling as he listens to the argument inside. In the center, a grizzled old priest grimaces angrily as the man at right leans forward aggressively, pushing up the sleeve of his kimono. The samurai kneeling behind him reacts with a horrified expression, gripping his sword with both hands. Between the men, the beauty Okoma sits on the floor, smiling and waving her hand. A gaping hole can be seen in the wall behind the men at right, with rubble on the floor below. The center panel features Nakamura Kamenojo as the beauty Okoma and Asao Yoroku as the Buddhist priest. The right panel shows Kawarazaki Gonjuro and Ichikawa Komazo. A fascinating subject with wonderfully expressive figures and a handsomely detailed setting.
