Kajiwara Genda Taira no Kagesue

Series; Selection of Six Men of Wisdom and Courage, circa 1850

Kajiwara Genda Taira no Kagesue - Handsome portrait of Kajiwara Genda Taira no Kagesue, one of Yoritomo's retainers. He is perhaps best remembered for his race across the Uji River against Sasaki Takasuna in a quest to engage Yoshinaka's forces first. He wears formal court dress, with a voluminous blue kamishimo over a finely patterned kimono and suit of armor, along with a tall black court cap. He grips a fan in on hand as he glares over his shoulder. A nice design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 7/8" x 14 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
